By kiss of life, I mean mouth-to-mouth during CPR! Gotcha! Well, yeah, you don’t need to be afraid anymore because, research has shown that the 2-step CPR, which involves calling for help, and hands only, works just fine without the ultimate kiss of life! Note: This might not work for a near-drowning victim. So, be on the lookout for another on drowning!

Let’s start with defining CPR! It stands for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. It usually consists of mouth-to-mouth respiration and chest compressions to the beat of 'Staying Alive' (you can find that in the video below). When someone goes into cardiac arrest, which is an electrical malfunction in the heart that causes irregular heartbeat and disrupts the flow of blood to the brain and other important organs, CPR is usually administered. Cardiac arrest could eventually lead to death. So, what CPR does is to allow blood to flow to those organs, thereby keeping the person alive till more advanced help can be administered (usually defibrillation – an electric shock to the chest). Most places in the US have Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) sitting somewhere. They are easy to use, just follow the voice prompts.

Did you also know that a heart attack is different from acardiac arrest? Yup! During a heart attack, blood does not stop pumping all over the body and the person doesn’t stop breathing. That’s not the case with cardiac arrest as everything stops! A heart attack could however lead to a cardiac arrest.

The point of this article is to let you know that if you are usually discouraged to perform CPR because of the mouth-to-mouth part, you can now scratch that because only chest compressions work just fine. YOU JUST HAVE TO CONTINUE TILL HELP ARRIVES! No, really, you cant stop till they wake up! And how do you know if someone needs CPR? It’s simple:
  • If someone suddenly collapses
  • You’ve called out asking ‘Are you okay?’ without any response
  • You notice the person isn’t breathing or is gasping
  • You’ve checked for a pulse and there isn’t any
