Stay woke cos after the flood come these...
My heart goes out to the people in Lagos, Nigeria, and other
areas of the world actually, affected by flood. While we would typically try to
make light of the situation because Nigerians (LOL!), I think we need to talk
about the after-effects of the flood on our health. I'll get right to it!
Flooding is a huge health risk because the water comes
with anything and everything (Well duh! 😒).
By everything, I mean sewage, feces from any living creature, trash, oil,
animals (I heard an alligator was captured casually strolling on the streets, no
kidding!)! Then it leaves behind a big parting gift consisting of microorganisms,
especially mold, that no one asked for. Sigh!
While we wait for the government to take care of the big
issues like, constructing more dams and improving on the drainage systems, how about we take care of the next big issue: Our health! So, in a place like Lagos, after
the flood might come the following:
1. Mosquitoes: This one is a no brainer really. With
flood comes stagnant water, and with stagnant water comes mosquitoes, and with
mosquitoes come MALARIA! There is likely going to be a spike in communicable
disease this season, so stay woke!
2. Mold and mildew: Mold grows quickly and conveniently in damp, dark and cool places which is what all that water from the flood creates. This is very important to note, especially
for pregnant women, children, people with asthma and other allergies, and people
with a compromised immune system. Exposure to mold can cause eye, throat, and
even skin irritation, coughing or wheezing, dizziness and other symptoms that
make you think you have a cold, but you gotta stay woke!
There are many other things that come with flooding such as electricity hazards, gas leaks, and many more, but the aforementioned might be easily overlooked. I have a few solutions you might want to consider:
1. Dry! Dry! Dry! Please make sure to dry out affected areas of the house as much as you can. This might cost some money but hiring industrial
cleaners won’t be a bad idea.
2. Disinfect. It’s not just mold, but other bacteria and microorganisms can find their way to stored food and
other items. So, keeping things clean would be good.
3. Throw things out. As hard as this would be,
flood comes with loss of property. It’s for your safety that you throw things
that could potentially (note that word) cause a health hazard.
4. Repel mosquitoes as much as possible. To prevent malaria. And keep
the environment always!.
5. Visit the doctor if you don't feel okay. This is not a time to self-medicate please. Be vigilant especially with kids. Any signs of sickness should be looked at by a professional. Again, stay woke!
And to all who have lost something as a result of the flood, I
pray that God in His kindness would replenish a thousand fold.
Stay strong and
be safe!💗
