'Dried fruits have more calories'....True or Nah?

Image
Hello dear Reader! How have you been? I’ve been well, a little stressed but nothing Jesus cannot handle *insert gospel hum*, thanks for asking! Anyway, I was looking through Facebook sometime back and I came across a post that warned people to stay far away from dried fruits because they contain more calories. I thought it was an interesting post and decided to look more into it. So, do dried fruits have more calories? Depends. If you are talking about processed dried fruits, then maybe, and that's because extra sugar is added to make them sweet. But naturally dried out fruits usually have the same amount of sugar they started out with.   nytimes.com The fact is that the major difference between a fresh fruit and a dried fruit is the amount of water in it. When water is taken out of a fruit though drying, the nutrients (except Vitamin C which reduces as a result of the process) subsequently become concentrated. Doesn’t necessarily mean more or less sugar, just suga

Hey YOUth, yes you! You can become President now

Hello dear readers! Hope you are having a good week so far. So, guess what! The Nigerian Senate just passed a bill to reduce the age for election! Boy oh boy, my oh my...who would have thought?! We are making some itty bitty progress. Sadly though, the Nigerian government is notorious for all talk but no action and I've already seen some comments online like 'Na so! (meaning 'Yeah right!') I'm sure they will make things difficult for us to even buy the forms talk-less of running for office'. And this might be correct because, simply put, corruption! Also, with the other bills passed that seemed to aim at giving more power to the legislative arm, it looked more like they just added the age reduction bill just to be on the good side of the youth, more like a consolation prize, as Nigerians would say 'Just manage this one'. But then again, let's give them the benefit of the doubt. They just might be for real this time. My reason for writing th

Stay woke cos after the flood come these...

My heart goes out to the people in Lagos, Nigeria, and other areas of the world actually, affected by flood. While we would typically try to make light of the situation because Nigerians (LOL!), I think we need to talk about the after-effects of the flood on our health. I'll get right to it! Flooding is a huge health risk because the water comes with anything and everything (Well duh! 😒).  By everything, I mean sewage, feces from any living creature, trash, oil, animals (I heard an alligator was captured casually strolling on the streets, no kidding!)! Then it leaves behind a big parting gift consisting of microorganisms, especially mold, that no one asked for. Sigh! While we wait for the government to take care of the big issues like, constructing more dams and improving on the drainage systems, how about we take care of the next big issue: Our health! So, in a place like Lagos, after the flood might come the following : 1.  Mosquitoes: This one is a no braine

5 gas safety DOS and definitely DO NOTS

Image
Growing up, I was taught that when using a gas cooker, it would be much safer to light the match first before turning on the gas. That way, the gas is lit immediately it comes out of the burner, rather than building up and causing a fire if you were to light the match after turning the gas on. I wrote a post on fire safety here . Look that up also. Gas is highly combustible and naturally odorless! Because of this odorless nature, these gases are mixed with odorants such as Hydrogen Sulfide or Ethyl Mercaptan so that they can be detected with the sense of smell. This way, one can tell when there’s a leak. In a household setting, you’d find either natural gas, methane, propane or butane gas…the smelly ones of course. Gas explosions occur when the gas plus air mixture reaches a critical value, at which any spark, flame, or heat source can ignite. As the gas burns in a confined space with little ventilation, the pressure builds until it goes BOOM...which is almost immediately

Lose your voice? Avoid these things to get your sweet voice back!

rebekahsimonpeter.com                                  Believe it or not, I didn’t know losing your voice was a condition called "Laryngitis". Right now, I have a hoarse voice, or like we used to say it growing up, my voice is gone! I did experience losing my voice quite a lot in secondary school and it was mostly as a result of my role as Head Girl and having to scream out instructions to the students! Story time! So, recently, I suffered a very bad cold. Like, it went the whole 9 yards; sore throat, congested nose and chest, and the feared fever! Who did I offend?! I was out, but my voice was still intact, or so I thought. Later in the week, I felt strong enough to attend a wedding. It was after the wedding I noticed my voice had left me *shrieks in horror*. What happened?! I wasn't quite sure if it was the cold or straining to talk as a result of the loud music at the wedding that caused it. I guess with laryngitis, it could be both! drugs.

thereadersroom.org Hi L2 Readers! (Boom! How ‘bout dah?) Hope you’re having a good year so far. Today, we have a guest on our blog, Yaaay! This is going to become a thing by the way, so let me know what you think. Back in the day, I worked as a Microbiologist in one of the leading pathology laboratories in Nigeria, and during my early intern days before I became full-time, I worked with a very intelligent and goal-driven lady by the name Chidimma Kayla Ezenduka-Ezike. She is a certified Medical Laboratory Scientist who has a passion for promoting knowledge and good laboratory practice…and she’s also my friend! So, LetLucia Readers, meet Chidmma. Chidimma, LetLucia Readers (For my non-Nigerian readers, her name is pronounce  Chee-dee-mmah ). She recently put up a simple Facebook post that clarified a certain issue she had identified having worked in the clinical medicine field for over 5 years in Nigeria. When I read it, I couldn’t help but ask to put it up on the blog

Nigerians, it’s not enough to rant! Proffer solutions as well!

Image
preparedgunowners.com I’m Nigerian and I love Nigeria with everything in me. If I had my way, I’d be the President and I’m pretty sure most Nigerians feel that urge to take control of the country as well, especially during these bad times! We all have that passion within us and that passion causes us to get very angry when we see things not going well. Hence, the rants and protests. I’m all for rants and protests. I mean, how else do we let the people in authority know exactly how we feel? My only concern is that we just rant without necessarily stating any solutions or suggestions. Could it be that we don't even know how to solve the problems? Or we say ‘they are the ones up there, they should know’. If you were appointed President right now, what would you do differently? You get my point? It’s not just enough to rant, state a solution! We tend to compare Nigeria to other developed countries, but the fact is that there isn’t a perfect system. None! You really canno

Does the ‘Kiss of Life’ scare you? You should read this!

andoverrec.com                                                  By kiss of life, I mean mouth-to-mouth during CPR! Gotcha! Well, yeah, you don’t need to be afraid anymore because, research has shown that the 2-step CPR, which involves calling for help, and hands only, works just fine without the ultimate kiss of life! Note: This might not work for a near-drowning victim. So, be on the lookout for another on drowning!   heart.org Let’s start with defining CPR ! It stands for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. It usually consists of mouth-to-mouth respiration and chest compressions to the beat of 'Staying Alive' (you can find that in the video below). When someone goes into cardiac arrest, which is an electrical malfunction in the heart that causes irregular heartbeat and disrupts the flow of blood to the brain and other important organs, CPR is usually administered. Cardiac arrest could eventually lead to death. So, what CPR does is to allow blood to flow to those o
